Of Mice and Men: MLA in-text citations

  1. Whole thing is one sentence, including
    1. your lead-in (signal phrase)
    2. the passage from the book
  2. The signal phrase is followed by a comma if that is appropriate for your sentence.
  3. “textual passage in quotation marks” – only include ? or ! for final punctuation of the passage
  4. (page number in parentheses) – only the number
  5. Period to end the whole sentence – counts as the period for the passage, too

Example: It’s clear that George is sometimes mad at Lennie when he says, “this time you got to remember so we don’t get in no trouble” (6).

- We know Lennie is comfortable with George because he often has a “delighted smile”(6).
